#Stand4Her: Avon Justine condemns violence against women
Avon Justine noted with distress and alarm the increasing incidents of femicide and violence perpetrated against women and children. As a company that is built on the ethos of Stand4Her, we view these harrowing incidents in a serious light and we wish to add our voice to the growing chorus of condemnation against all forms of violence.
Working with like-minded organisations such as People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), 1000 Women’s Trust, TEARS Foundation, Yokhuselo Haven, the Epic Foundation, Lawyers Against Abuse, the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women & Children, Mosaic and WARear, Avon Justine has nailed its colours on the mast in the fight against gender based violence by raising in excess of R8 million to fund the causes championed by these organisations.
Through an initiative called Avon Light Up to Speak Up, we have also given a face and a voice to survivors of gender-based violence and have harnessed the power of our brand to intensify the fight against patriarchy and femicide.
The fight against gender based violence is not a fight for women, but it is a national pandemic that calls on all of us to call out incidents of misogyny, whether explicit or inferred.
We call upon survivors of gender-based violence to contact any of these organisations should they feel distraught, seek counselling or require legal advice.
According to statistics from the South African Police Services (SAPS), a woman is killed every four hours in South Africa, often the perpetrator is a loved one or someone she knows.
We need to work together to root out this cancer from our society. It starts with each and every one of us. We need demonise misogynistic practices and de-commodify our mothers, sisters and daughters.
